The book about the first Abaza writers received a prize of the head of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic of 2018 in the field of literature and art. The work is called “The Fates of the Abaza Literary Intelligentsia in the Pre-War and War Years: Following the Traces of Archival Materials” and was written by Georgy and Peter Chekalov. Georgy Chekalov heads the department of information and analytical support for ANO “Alashara”, and his brother Peter Chekalov is a doctor of philological sciences.

The authors explore the fate of the first Abaza poets, writers and journalists, based on archival documents. The names of many writers are little known to the general reader and even to specialists. Of the 29 heroes of the book, four became victims of repression, eight people died during the Great Patriotic War, three after the war remained outside of their historic homeland. The frontline biography of the Abaza writers has not yet been studied by literary critics, and the Chekalov brothers' book fills this gap.

The study of the Chekalov brothers was conducted within the framework of the scientific program of the International Association “Alashara” “Abaza and Abkhaz: the preservation and development of languages and historical and cultural heritage”.

The fact that the work was marked by a high prize “makes it possible to think that it really matters,” Georgy Chekalov believes.

“My brother and I wrote it for about a year. Part of the material has already been developed, some collected. The book is published in an edition of 300 copies. We immediately distributed them to schools and libraries, some were transferred to the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Abkhazia,” said the laureate.

The prize of the head of KChR was also received by the writer Kazi-Magomed Totorkulov, the young poet Arthur Kencheshaov, the sculptor Koshali Zarmanbetov and the staff of the Khalimat Bayramukova Karachay-Cherkess National Library.
