The annual requiem concert dedicated to the people of Abkhazia who fell in the Patriotic War was held at the Razhden Gumba State Philharmonic in Sukhum on Monday, March 18.

The event was organized by the Razhden Gumba State Philharmonic with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage.

Chief public relations manager of the State Philharmonic Society Arifa Kapba told that this year the concert was attended by such musicians from Russia as Honored Artist of Russia Margarita Spiridonova, violinist Viktor Abramyan-Eshba, cellist Andrey Spiridonov, laureates of international competitions - pianist Mikhail Turpanov and gobo player Alexey Balashov.

“Music heals, heals spiritual wounds, even if only for a short time, but still allows you to forget your pain for a while. For us it is important that these concerts are always of high quality and with only high-level performers. And we always, fortunately, succeed. They (concerts - ed.) are exactly like that, completely different, but always interesting. Every year the Abkhaz State Chamber Orchestra performs with us under the baton of Honored Artist of Abkhazia, conductor David Terzyan. We intend to continue this tradition - to hold requiem concerts, since we feel that people are waiting for them every year,” said Kapba.

The special guest of the evening is the young violinist Maria-Emilia Terzyan-Khagba, who for the first time took part in this concert and performed the lyric work “Legends” by Henryk Wieniawski.

“For me, this is a great honor and responsibility. I dedicated my performance to the heroes who fought for the freedom and independence of Abkhazia, as well as innocent children who died and all civilians. The work that I played bears both tragic character and hope for a bright future,” said Terzyan-Khagba.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Culture and the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Abkhazia, Saria Marshan, said that requiem concerts have been held annually with the support of the ministry for four years.

“For me personally, this is a very important event, a tribute to those who are no longer with us. I am glad that in the Abkhaz State Philharmonic Society such events are held annually in honor of people who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and independence of Abkhazia. We should cherish the peace and remember at what cost it was attained,” Marchan shared her emotions.

During the years of the concert-requiem, it also obtained regular fans, including the journalist Renata Shakaya.

“This year I brought children to the concert, because it is important to speak, it is important to remember. Transferring memory through music is one of the most effective ways. This is our pain and our pride, it is the memory of those who wanted to live, but put the common good above all. Thanks to all the organizers of this concert. You listen to music — you think about these guys, and tears come from your eyes,” said Shakaya.

At the memorial evening, music pieces by Platti, Mozart, Beethoven, Wieniawski, Barber, Shostakovich were played.

The first concert dedicated to the memory of the people who fell in the Patriotic War, Abkhazia, was held in 2015 and has been held annually ever since. Over the years, the project has collaborated with the State Chamber Orchestra of Abkhazia, the State Choir Chapel of Abkhazia and the State Choir Chapel of Moscow.
