More than 300 kg of garbage was collected from the Gumista River as part of the pilot version of the "Clean Games" project.

For the first time in Abkhazia, the environmental action "Clean Games" was held. It was organized by the staff of the World Abaza Congress Kherson Simonia and Shazina Bganba, as well as the founder of the initiative group "World of Equal Opportunities" Alias Akaba. The idea of holding the games in Abkhazia arose at the X Nevsky International Ecological Congress, which was held in St. Petersburg in the spring.

"Various environmental problems were discussed at the Nevsky Congress - climate change, soil pollution, depletion of water and forest resources. At the end of the event, it was decided to hold the games in all the countries that took part in the forum. This is still a pilot version of the project, we are preparing full-scale competitions that will be held in October," said Kherson Simonia, specialist of the WAC Department for working with local branches.

The first "Clean Games" were held in St. Petersburg nine years ago. The rules of the game are similar to sports: participants are divided into teams and clear the territory of garbage, simultaneously completing tasks in the form of quests. According to Simonia, the main idea of the eco-quest is to draw the attention of young people to the problems of environmental protection through the game, to form an ecological culture and an active life position.

The environmental campaign was organized with the assistance of the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Abkhazia. The Administration of Sukhum, which provided a garbage truck helped with preparation of the event. The coastal territory of the Gumista River was chosen as the venue for the games.

According to the rules, "Clean Games" last no more than an hour. During this time, participants  divide into teams, collect and sort garbage. The team with the most points wins.

The participants were students of the Sukhum Boarding School named after Dzidzaria. One of them - Amra Tarba - shared her impressions of the campaign.

"At first, it seemed to me that it would be difficult to cope with the tasks set, and even stay within 30 minutes. Time flew by. We were divided into teams, and it seems that we did a good job. Together we collected as many as 43 bags of garbage," said Tarba. According to her, the students managed to feel the spirit of the competition. "We tried to collect more garbage and beat our opponents. All in all, we had fun and enjoyable time. I would like to take part in such games again," she added.

The founder of the initiative group "World of Equal Opportunities" Alias Akaba told about the results of the action.

"Within 30 minutes, the children collected the garbage and sorted it into separate categories: glass, plastic and other waste. In total, 4 garbage bags of plastic, 9 bags of glass and 30 bags of combined garbage were collected," Akaba said.

The winning team received notebooks, pens and T-shirts with the logo of the World Abaza Congress as a gift.
