A monument to Major General of the Syrian Army, an outstanding public and political figure Oualid Marshand was opened in Sukhum.

A monument in honor of the outstanding representative of the Abkhaz-Abaza ethnos, General of the Syrian Army, Oualid Marshand, was opened in the courtyard of the Ministry for the Repatriation of the Republic of Abkhazia on Thursday, January 24. The author of the monument is the Abkhaz sculptor Vitaly Dzheniya.
The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba. Speaking to the guests of the event, he stressed that the name of General Marshand is not to be forgotten, and that the opening of the monument is a significant event in the history of Abkhazia.
"Oualid Marshand will remain in the memory of our people as a hero, who always worried about the fate of his homeland - Abkhazia, fought for its freedom and independence, was a great patriot who always defended the truth," said the President in a solemn speech.
According to Raul Khadzhimba, Oualid Marshand devoted the last years of his life to confronting the forces of international terrorism, which tried to destroy Syria as a state. When the Syrian Arab Republic was in danger, the General, without hesitation, took the path of fighting the aggressors, the RA President noted. He emphasized the role of General Marshand in the relations between Syria and Abkhazia, in the process of recognition of the independence of Abkhazia by the Syrian Arab Republic.
The Minister for Repatriation of Abkhazia Beslan Dbar also spoke about the heroism and courage of the Syrian general.
"A true patriot, Major General of the Syrian Army and a worthy son of the Abkhaz people, he contributed a lot to the fight against international terrorism. Oualid Marshand was one of those prominent members of the Syrian Abkhaz-Circassian Diaspora who actively contributed to the process of recognizing our independence," the Minister said.
Major General of the Syrian Arab Republic, Oualid Marshand, was born in 1948 in the city of Al-Quneitra. Being an active representative of the Abkhaz Diaspora in Syria, he put a lot of effort to bring the Abkhaz and Syrian peoples closer. Marshand repeatedly visited Abkhazia.
Over the years of his life, he has held various high positions in the Syrian Arab Republic. In early 2005, he resigned, and when the war began in Syria in 2011, he voluntarily created a detachment of people’s resistance, which is still active today. In 2013, Oualid Marshand led the party of Bashar Assad - the party of the Arab socialist revival of the city of Al-Quneitra. He was later replaced on this position by his eldest son Halit. October 14, 2017, Oualid Marshand died after a long illness. He was 69.
