Mussa Ekzekov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the World Abaza Congress, congratulated the people of Abkhazia on the national holiday - the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the current Constitution, which is celebrated on November 26.

In his congratulation, the head of the WAC noted that the Constitution at all times and among all peoples was the personification of statehood, citizenship and democratic values.

“The basic law of the Abkhaz state is a document that has absorbed the centuries-old history and outstanding achievements of the people, as well as determining the foundations of its political, legal and economic systems,” said Mussa Ekzekov.

The Chairman of the Supreme Council of the WAC emphasized that the day of November 26, 1994 became a milestone in the history of the Republic of Abkhazia, because the Constitution adopted on that day made it possible to preserve state principles, strengthen sovereignty, and create the necessary conditions for further progressive development of the country.

“The need to constantly improve the mechanisms of social harmony and the unification of all healthy forces of society in order to improve the living conditions of the population is the most important task that the Constitution has, to solve,” Mussa Ekzekov believes.

He emphasized, addressing the whole people, that it is important to realize the responsibility for the future of the Republic to present and future generations, to protect the values proclaimed by the Constitution, and to remember that the well-being of the population depends on the ability to find new solutions to create a strong economy, modernize democratic institutions, and increase efficiency of the functioning of the authorities.

“I am convinced that further strengthening of constitutional values will become a reliable guarantee of future achievements of the Republic of Abkhazia and will lead to the well-being of the people of Apsny.  On this holiday, I want to wish all the Abkhaz-Abaza people good health and prosperity,” concluded Ekzekov.

The Constitution, adopted on November 26, 1994, was the result of many years of struggle by the Abkhaz people for freedom and independence. The work on the new fundamental law of the Republic began after the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia 1992-1993.  First, on July 23, 1992, at the meeting of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, a decision was made to move to the 1925 Constitution of the Abkhaz SSR.  It proclaimed Abkhazia a sovereign state, but at the same time did not correspond to the realities of the time.  Therefore, a constitutional commission was created that worked with several proposed projects to create a new text.

The current Constitution of the Republic of Abkhazia consists of 7 chapters and 84 articles. It was amended twice, in 2014 and 2016: in the first case, the Constitutional Court was established, and in the second case, abortion was prohibited at the highest state level.
