Not broken: Abkhazia honored the memory of the victims of the Caucasian War

Commemorative events on May 21 began at the Abkhazian Drama Theater. The youth theater presented a performance based on the book of the same name "The Last of the Departed" - the greatest historical novel by Bagrat Shinkuba about the tragic fate of the Ubykh people, which was translated into many languages of the world.

A photo exhibition was held at the memorial to the victims of the Caucasian War during the day. The exposition consisted of archival photographs and drawings made by victims of forced resettlement, various sketches of that time.

By evening, the Sukhum embankment was filled with people. They gathered on the square named after Sergey Bagapsh and walked in a column along the embankment towards the monument to the victims of the Caucasian War.

The column was led by riders in national costumes, followed by torchbearers.

The team of the World Abaza Congress took part in the ceremony of laying flowers at the memorial.

The event was attended by many young people. Lots of young people were holding Abkhazian and Adyg flags.

Some of them were holding torches.

Schoolchildren from different regions of Abkhazia took part in the flower-laying ceremony.

After laying flowers and wreaths, children recited memorable poems.

A repatriate from Turkey Kadyr Tvandba lit Aschamakya, a traditional Abkhazian candle. Some of the participants in the event helped him with this procedure.

The famous Abkhazian singer, the soloist of the famous Abkhazian group "Apsny-67" Lyudmila Gunba sang the lullaby "Шьышь нани". It was this lullaby that became a musical symbol of the tragedy of the entire people and their forced resettlement from their native lands during and after the war.

Everyone could take part in lighting the Nart bonfire (a large bonfire, which is indicated in the legends about the Nart epos as the Nart bonfire - ed.).

The commemorative events on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Caucasian War concluded with the lighting of the Nart bonfire and the descent of wreaths to the sea.
