On April 11, three cases of COVID-19 infeA third case of coronavirus infection was detected in Abkhazia over the past day, said Alkhas Kondzharia, Deputy Head of the Medical Operational Headquarters, Deputy Minister of Health of Abkhazia, in a daily appeal to residents of the country.

He said that a positive result of the test for coronavirus was revealed in another citizens who had contact with the first two patients.

“A patient born in 1925.  The patient is on self-isolation under the supervision of specialists.  His condition is regarded as moderate.  Thus, today in the Republic there are three confirmed cases of coronavirus,” summed up Kondzharia.

The Deputy Minister said that the first two patients continue to be under the supervision of doctors at the Gudauta Central Hospital, their condition is without negative dynamics.

Over the past day, four more people were tested for coronavirus.  Everyone had a negative result.

Alhas Kondzharia reminded that hotlines are working in Abkhazia on the situation with the coronavirus.

“By calling 0303 you can apply for medical assistance, by calling 0404 you can seek psychological help, and the Abkhaz Ministry of Internal Affairs hotline 920-20-95 also operates,” he said.

 Meeting at the Administration of Gagra

All three patients with COVID-19 in Abkhazia are from Gagra.  Earlier, the authorities took a number of measures to prevent the spread of infection, in particular, curfew was introduced in Gagra.

The Acting President of the Republic of Abkhazia, Prime Minister Valery Bganba, held a meeting on April 11 at the Administration of the Gagra District. Bganba instructed the meeting participants to create an asset under the leadership of deputies of the town and district assemblies, which will monitor the process of self-isolation of citizens. Points where citizens who do not have conditions for self-isolation can be accommodated for 14 days are also identified.

During the meeting, employees of the district SES and medical institutions reported to the head of the Government about work in the area:

“Two ambulances serve only temperature-sensitive patients. If during the examination the doctor considers it necessary to conduct testing for the detection of coronavirus infection, then, by prior agreement with the Republican SES, we carry out the collection of biomaterial for the study. For example, today there were four such patients,” said the head physician of the Gagra Hospital, Vyacheslav Argun.

He said that the hospital has a sufficient number of protective equipment together with a CT scanner. There is a problem with the functioning of ventilators, but the hospital is expecting two new ventilators soon.

“The medical institution is not overburdened, in the hospital today there are 25 patients with somatic diseases,” the head doctor added.

Since March 24, 2020, the leadership of Abkhazia has taken a set of measures to protect the population of Abkhazia from the coronavirus infection COVID-19 - in particular, mass events were discontinued, educational institutions were disbanded, government agencies were restricted, retail outlets were closed, with the exception of food and essential goods, and  also pharmacies, movement of citizens was limited, a number of other measures have been taken.

Since March 28, a state of emergency has been declared in the Republic: the Abkhaz-Russian border has been temporarily closed for crossing, with the exception of military personnel and diplomats, control over crossing the state border has been strengthened for citizens of Abkhazia returning to the Republic.

The charity movement “We are Together” and representatives of the Moscow Abkhaz Diaspora, newly created by Abkhaz entrepreneurs, announced a fundraiser to help Abkhazia fight the new disease and protect the population of Abkhazia.  To date, nearly 55 million rubles have been raised.
