On April 8, two cases of coronavirus infection were detected in Abkhazia, Deputy Head of the Medical Operations Headquarters, Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Abkhazia Alkhas Kondzharia said in a daily appeal to residents of Abkhazia.
He recalled that the first patient with COVID-19 was revealed the day before, on April 7, he is a resident of Gagra. His condition today is of moderate severity. The second case was identified among those who had contact with the patient.
“A positive result was revealed in one of them (a family member of the first sick person - ed.). He is now in self-isolation mode. His condition is satisfactory, he is under observation and receives the necessary therapy,” said the Deputy Minister.

Alhas Kondzharia said that over the past 24 hours another 5 people have been tested for coronavirus. All the results were negative.
The representative of the Operations HQ said that last night a 15-year-old boy died, who was brought to a medical institution in an extremely serious condition. He was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the hospital, but despite the emergency treatment carried out for an hour, he could not be saved.
“Given the epidemiological situation in the country, he was tested for COVID-19, as a result of which the coronavirus was not detected. We express our condolences to the family and friends,” said Kondzharia.
Additional measures and address of the Acting President
In order to prevent the spread in the Republic of Abkhazia of a coronavirus infection, COVID-19, Acting President Valery Bganba signed a decree imposing a curfew on the territory of the Gagra region. The curfew will run from 20:00 to 07:00.
“During curfews to prohibit citizens from staying on the streets or in other public places, or staying outside their homes, with the exception of representatives of law enforcement and health agencies, public health institutions, emergency rescue, fire and communal services, and persons providing banking infrastructure facilities, as well as persons, in case of applying for emergency medical care,” the order says.
Valery Bganba addressed the residents of Abkhazia. He noted that the activities of the country's leadership, the government, the dedicated work of hundreds and thousands of people, doctors, border guards, police, sanitary doctors, volunteers and many others allowed for a long time to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Abkhazia, although the epidemic was raging in all neighboring countries.
“Today we have entered a new phase in countering the epidemic. This phase is more complicated, more difficult - everything possible must be done to stop the disease in its outbreak, to prevent its spread throughout our country and, of course, to provide treatment for patients. Thanks to the measures taken by the government and assistance to our business, we have and continue to purchase medical equipment, medicines, everything that is necessary to treat our citizens,” he said.
In his address, Acting President once again called on the residents of Abkhazia to observe self-isolation.
“The main task in the fight against the spread of the epidemic lies with you, dear friends. You must save yourself, your family, your friends. All this can be done in one way - not to go out into the street unnecessarily, to do everything that health workers ask for. Our lack of discipline, lack of civic consciousness can lead to great trouble,” Bganba warned.
Since March 24, 2020, the leadership of Abkhazia has taken a set of measures to protect the population of Abkhazia from the coronavirus infection COVID-19 - in particular, mass events were discontinued, educational institutions were disbanded, government agencies were restricted, retail outlets were closed, with the exception of food and essential goods, and also pharmacies, movement of citizens was limited, a number of other measures have been taken.
Since March 28, a state of emergency has been introduced in the Republic: the Abkhaz-Russian border has been temporarily closed for crossing, with the exception of military personnel and diplomats, control over crossing the state border has been strengthened for citizens of Abkhazia returning to the Republic.
